Letters of the Marchant-Jordan family, 1845-1858.

The collection consists of personal letters: Ann H. Jordan, 1845, to her parents Jacob and Elizabeth Jordan; John A. Marchant, 1851, 1858, to his niece Ann Jordan; Henry Clay Marchant, 1858, to his cousin Ann Jordan; Louisa D. Pace, 1851, to her friend. John and Henry Clay Marchant attempt to quiet her distress about slavery. Henry Clay Marchant mentions purchasing a cotton mill in Charlottesville. Also included is H.L. Holladay's recommendation as a teacher for Ann H. Jordan, 1850; and John A Marchant's account with Kent Payne & Kent, Richmond, 1850.

Charlottesville Woolen Mills

Located in Charlottesville, Va. and begun as a woolen mill during the Civil War, the company occupied the site of an earlier cotton carding and spinning mill. Incorporated in 1868 by H.C. Marchant, the mill did carding and fulling for the local domestic market and produced a coarse grade of woolen cloth. Later it produced flannels, satinets, kerseys and cassimeres. It later specialized in uniform cloth, including cadet greys, venetians, and kersey overcoating. The mill operated until 1965. ...
